The conundrum of the perfect gift

Whether it is doing an activity together or giving something special, everyone enjoys celebrating their loved ones. However, picking the perfect gift can be extremely difficult and confusing. Wouldn't it be great if there was a tool that would guide you to the perfect gift? Gift Pick is an app idea that aims to help people pick the perfect gift using quizzes tailored to occasion and person you are shopping for.

Gift Pick

Whether it is doing an activity together or giving something special, everyone enjoys celebrating their loved ones. However, picking the perfect gift can be extremely difficult and confusing. Wouldn't it be great if there was a tool that would guide you to the perfect gift? Gift Pick is an app idea that aims to help people pick the perfect using quizzes tailored to the event and person.

Site Architecture

There are four key branches of navigation for the first time user: onboarding, quiz categories, dashboard, and collaborations. Quiz Categories will be the default home page since taking gift quizzes is its primary function. The Dashboard is to serve more of an organizational space to keep track of events, quizzes, and gift history. The collaboration section is a space to organize gift giving when people want to team up together to give a gift.

Visual Language

We wanted the app to feel clean, friendly and add a touch of nostalgia to honor the brand name and the concept of the product. We decided to use a serif typeface for the logo paired with a simple location icon with a key inside that would act as a favicon. For the illustration, we stuck to keep the details as simple as possible and to give forms more dimension gradients with grain texture was added on top.

Site Architecture

There are three key branches of navigation for the first time user: onboarding, map, and me. We wanted journeys to be the most accessible thing to encourage users to tap on a journey that interests them the most. To add further motivation, we wanted to add a gaming aspect to the app by giving players ranks as they increase their explorations found in the me section.

Potential user journey

To chart out a potential user journey I storyboarded for a use case of a daughter picking out a gift for her mother's 50th birthday.

Screen iterations and user feedback

For my first iteration of screens I focused on the main user flow in the storyboard, the quiz.

I was inspired by the structure of fun quizzes like Buzzfeed. Simple grid that is easy to follow.
Results would listed by relevance.
I thought at first embedding a shopping experience too so I had a buy it button.
In this round I made the nav easier to read and added a step of choosing a category so that quizzes could better be tailored to the occasion.
The quiz structure remained.
I was given feedback that instead of embedding a buying experience it would be simpler to have results link to 3rd party systems.

Site architecture

I recieved feedback that it would be good to have a record of gifts, events, and even a space to collaborae on a gift. I mapped out these new additions to the application's site architecture and kept to three primary tabs. One tab is dedicated to an overview of gifts in progress and events, another for taking quizzes, and a dedicated space for collaboration.

Brand language

I wanted the app to embody the feeling of celebration and joy yet be minimalistic in how many visual elements I  have on a screen. I chose to with a clean illustration style with slightly round edge and simple shapes that overlap. My logo is type based with a yellow ribbon behind. I used the typefaces Circe Slab A which I felt was appropriate because it has a hint of personality but still simple and clean which is reinforced by second typeface used Museo Sans.

Onboarding
These screens introduce users to the main functions of the app. Through out the app the motifs of ribbons and confetti is used to bring in the celebratory spirit to the process of gift selection and gift giving.
Welcome page clearly states the purpose of the app.
Onboarding continues on to explain the first component of the app.
Then other added features are explain.
Last feature invites users to work with other people in planning for gifts.
Gift Quiz Categories
Gift quiz categories serves as the home page for this app. The goal is to have taking a quiz be the easiest thing for users to do in the app especially popular categories.
Popular categories are made more accessible just as popular genres are most accessible in music apps.
Selections in the quiz section are typically highlighted in yellow.
After a category is picked sub categories are listed for people to pick a more specific quiz to get more accurate results.
After the sub category is selected, the start quiz page comes with a relating icon and text confirming the quiz type before starting.
Questions and Results
Questions for each quiz type vary but typically try to hone down on the interests of the gift receiver and connect items are experiences to their interests. Based on responses results are listed by relevance but can be ordered differently.
Quiz questions start of with questions that establish general parameters for the following questions.
Then based on previous answers more specific questions follow.
After answering all questions a list of results pop up leading to 3rd party sites where gift purchases can be completed.
Dashboard
Sometimes we need a reminder to buy a gift before the event, or we want to refer to gifts previously bought. The Dashboard is the place where you can see upcoming events, quizzes taken previously and see what results you picked, or even go back to quizzes in progress.
Popular categories are made more accessible just as popular genres are most accessible in music apps.
Adding events is a simple process. It starts by pressing the button at the bottom of the section.
An event form follows giving users space to title the event, select a day, and customize reminders.
Once all sections are filled the set event button lights up blue indicating event is ready to be added.
Upcoming events update on the dashboard.  Anymore than three move to the pop up tab of the full list of events.
Collaborations
There are number of occasions where people collaborate on one big gift instead of buying a bunch of smaller gifts. The collaborations tab is a place where important details can be established and discussions can take place. This makes its so people can quickly refer to these details in once centralized place rather than looking through a text message.
Each collaboration has it's own section that is labeled by the event and has key details that easy to refer back to.
Starting a new collaboration begins with the button on top.
Once a collaboration is started and titled a tab at the top comes up with free to fill out as details are agreed upon.
Collaborator can be added with the button bellow the details.
A list of contacts appear to pick from.
Welcome page that introduces the analogy of sharing moments vial locks.
Tapping on the arrow of the top tab tucks away the detail tab. Discussion take place below the top tab.
Polls can be set up to vote on gift ideas in the chat itself to make the gift pick clear and easy.
The picked gift shows up on the collaboration section next to details once it's picked.

Final screens

Here are some key screens from the final prototype. I changed the color palette to induce more joy and made the visual language feel more on-theme.

A festive splash screen.
Added an onboarding to outline the main features provided.
Icons are now more refined.
Progress bar added to keep users informed and satisfied of progress.
Added a statement on the top that further clarifies that the quiz has come to the end.
Added a dashboard to have a record of gifts and events.
Users can also add reminders.
I adopted a chat model for collaboration. Because often it takes a bit of discussing to have a consensus on a gift.
You can also set up polls in chat.
Each collaboration has an info card.

Takeaways

I enjoyed creating the concept of this app and visual language. It would be really cool to see it come to life one day. As much as I love the concept, sometimes a quiz can be a little restraining or some questions might be irrelevant.  Hence why I would like to test and experiment more ways to filter out a perfect gift.
